One of the true pleasures I have experienced over the last three years is being approached by friends and total strangers alike to talk through the complications which accompany spinal cord injury. Whether they have suffered injuries themselves or are sourcing information for loved ones, it has been incredibly satisfying to be able to use what otherwise may be considered a challenging injury, to positively help people. The Internet has been a wonderful facilitator in this respect.
This week, for instance, I was contacted by Svetlana in Russia, who recently had a cervical vertebrae injury herself and was hoping to gain some therapy tips from a recovering quadriplegic. As such, I found myself one afternoon on skype calling a perfect stranger discussing methods and options for rehabilitation. How amazing!
Although I have come an incredibly long way, speaking to people who are just starting their journey reminds me how tough the early period post injury is. Hearing from others how their accident is not only affecting them, but changing the dynamics of their relationships with family and friends also rings true. That said, like with any major challenge in ones life, time certainly changes things.
Ultimately these conversations are a perfect way for me to reflect and appreciate how lucky I have been with my recovery. Many others have not registered such improvement. The constant message remains, that with close family support and good friends around you, the journey is a remarkably easier road.
My hope is that these conversations and approaches will continue well into my adult life.
