ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM 2010

Australian's Swimming English Channel for Fundraising

LATEST UPDATE:  HOPEFULLY SEPTEMBER 16/17 IN COLD WATERS!

A group of Australian mates based in London (& one token Pommy) are attempting to swim the English Channel on 17 August 2010 (subject to tides) to help raise funds for their friend.

The relay team consists of Luke Dillon (Captain), Jason Robinson, Rob Buckley, Marty Walsh & Jonathan Bramley (GBR).

The team will embark on the 21mile (34km) journey at dawn. We see this 12hr swim as a small sacrifice to help a great friend in need.

Official English Channel crossing rules do not permit the use of protective shark cages or wetsuits, so only fluro lime green Speedo’s entitled ‘Budgie Smugglers’ will be worn in the strong currents and chilling 16 degree sea. Oh joy !

Why are we doing it ?

In November 2008, our mate James Gribble had a freak accident while travelling in Africa. It resulted in severe spinal damage, leaving him a quadriplegic. To read about James' inspirational story visit his website: www.puffinmagic.org.au

The Puffin Magic Foundation (PMF) was founded with the goal of supporting James throughout his rehabilitation.

That’s where you can help!  The PMF requests your support in the form of a donation which will assist in James’ rehabilitation by funding the therapies, equipment and associated support services that will give him the best shot at recovery.

ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM 2010

When: 17-Sep-2010 to 18-Sep-2010

WEATHER DELAY Unfortunately, due to unseasonably changeable weather conditions, the Team have been unable to attempt our scheduled crossing on this current low tide. Arrangements have been made with the Skipper of our support boat to attempt on either 16 or 17 September. As a consequence, the sea will be colder and we'll most probably start and end the swim in the dark given the reduced hours of light. Its worth noting that there have only been 600 successful attempts of crossing the Channel. So, even though the wind gods mock us, we shall be patient and treat Mother Nature with the respect she deserves. On behalf of the team and James (PMF), I thank you for the overwhelming amount of support !! Channel Team 2010 DON'T MISS THE SLIDESHOW. Click below.
